Rick Rack Roses &; Yet Another Giveaway
Did you think I forgot about this little project I warned you about?
I didn’t forget. But in classic Carey fashion, I did get sidetracked with other things. But today I sat down and finished! Curious yet? The suspense getting to you? I won’t make you wait any longer….
If you follow me on Facebook (<ahem>, if you don’t you should! There is even more sharing going on over there.), you would have read my mention of the rick-rack roses tutorial over at The Crafting Chicks.

As soon as I saw this little project I had a plan for these little rick-rack roses. So guess what I sat down and made????
Rings, can you believe it?! OK, if you’ve been around here for more than…oh, I don’t know… A MINUTE you already know about my ridiculous love of rings. You probably guessed it was rings before I even mentioned it. Well, that and the picture of the ring base was a dead give away. And speaking of rings, I may or may not have bought another new one this week…. anyway….
The Crafting Chicks inspired me so I ran down to Michael’s & the fabric store to pick up some ring bases and ric-rac (I really don’t know which is the proper way to spell it) and got to work. Their excellent tutorial can be found here. I’ll just show you a few pics of my work along the way.
The first step is the hardest, and it isn’t all that bad. You have to take 2 pieces and ric-rac and twist them together. They will sorta interlock. Then to keep them stable you run a simple stitch with the sewing machine straight down the middle. For some reason the bobbin thread kept getting all bunched up underneath so it took me la little longer than it should have but even with that complication it took less than 1/2 hour.
Then you literally just roll it up into a ball. To keep it secure, you take a good sized needle and run a stitch or two straight through the middle of the ball.
Next, just glue it down to the ring base. I used some fabric glue I had in stock (you just never know what you’re going to find in my magic craft stash).
Let it dry for a bit and voila! So easy, but so fun and quirky! I really love it.
This is the yellow one I made with the jumbo ric-rac. You’ll notice a difference in the “petals”, they are slightly turned down. A little more realistic as a flower, or at least a different interpretation of a flower. They bend down easily, but they occasionally pop back. You just have to bend them back into place. I’m sure that after a while they will stay put.
Now, you know I can’t make one and not make one for you! Well, at least one of you. So here’s the deal:
The yellow one will be going home to live with one you, my reader-friends! AND you get 2 chances to win:
- Leave a comment here on this post and tell me what you plan to wear it with, should you be the lucky winner.

Dear Lillie: He Has Risen Download
Dear Lillie: An Easter/Spring Wreath and He Has Risen Download.
I really wish I had written a meaningful and deeply spiritual post for Easter. As a Christian, this is one of the most important times of rememberance for our faith. I would loved to have shared something from the heart about the Easter season.
But the truth is, I’m worn out. This past month, life has chewed me up and spit me out and all I want is to sneak off to some far away place, no cell phones, no computer. Just me, the sunshine and a lounge chair. And silence.
BUT….
I saw this printable today from Dear Lillie:
And my soul sighed and said, “It is well.”
I hope you will pop over to her site, and print out this little sign. And remember that Jesus paid it all.
Love you all. Yep, I do.
My Succulents Forgave Me
My poor succulents! I completely forgot to bring them in over the winter and by the time I remembered the frosts were nearly over. I was afraid to go out and look at them but lo and behold… They survived! Not only survived, that one creeper variety took off! So now I’m on the lookout for a new variety to fill that last bald patch of dirt. Any favorites??? I kinda want something upright and compact, like the taller reddish one that’s already planted. Let me know if you see something good! BTW: this post is a test run of the WordPress app on my IPhone. Keeping my fingers crossed it works ok because with it I will be able to post when I’m away from the computer. Like when I’m in the garden, planting my plantation of basil that I have planned this year. Or when I visit Lucero’s olive oil tasting room (planning that trip now). Or when I’m sitting on the couch and just too darn lazy to walk over to my laptop. I’m not saying that’s where I am right now… but could be…

Liz Taylor, Really Grandma?
I was saddened to hear about the passing of Elizabeth Taylor earlier this month. One of my favorite movies is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, starring Liz and Paul Newman. Elizabeth Taylor is such an icon for Hollywood and although her acting could sometimes be over the top, there is just no denying her talent.
Oddly, one of my favorite memories of my Great Grandmother Patterson revolves around Elizabeth Taylor. Here is what happened:
My Great Grandmother Patterson (Grandma Pat) lived in Gridley, CA and my mom and I would often drive over and visit her. As most grandma’s do, she loved to dote on me (I was the only grandchild that lived close by) and she would often say to me, “Carey, you are so pretty; you look just like Elizabeth Taylor.”
Now, let me clarify something. At this time I was roughly 5-10 years old. And all I knew of Elizabeth Taylor was this:

And so you can imagine my confusion and embarrassment that my Grandma thought I looked like… that. In fact, it made me really self-conscious and I didn’t want to ever hear about Liz Taylor.
And then one day on the way home from Gridley my mother finally put the record straight. She explained that when Grandma Pat was thinking of Liz Taylor, she was remembering this girl:

Now… I really wish that I looked like the Liz Taylor from these photos because I think she is just stunning. But besides both being brunette, I don’t think there is much resemblance BUT I finally understood that my Grandma was paying me the highest compliment that she could… she was comparing me to one of her beauty idols.
Grandma was forgiven.
