Pinterest: It’s an Obsession

I pin.  I pin a lot.  Then I talked my sister into pinning and now she pins a lot.  I tempted friends and now they pin.  It’s a Pinterest world and I’m just in it.

I don’t remember where I first saw it, but one of my favorite bloggers posted a pretty picture on her website and I noticed that in the caption it said “via Pinterest.”  Well, my curious self just had to know what that meant, so I clicked on it.

And then my eyes were opened to a brand new world.  A world where people posted thousands of links to pretty things.  They posted links to useful DIY projects.  They posted links to delicious recipes.  And so, so much more.  Let me give you a few examples:

As I clicked and scrolled around the site my brain went on creative overload, so what did I do?  I joined!

To join Pinterest you must request an invitation or get invited personally by someone who is already on Pinterest.  After your request is confirmed you can begin “pinning” pictures of interest, saving them to “boards”.  Think of it as an online bulletin board.  When you see something you like, you stick a virtual pin in it to remember it later, that’s “pinning”.  And you can upload your own inspirations as well, allowing other people to pin them to their own boards.

As if my addiction wasn’t bad enough, recently Pinterest added an Iphone App to their repertoire, so now I can “pin” wherever I am: the grocery store, the bank, boring meetings, the bathroo..er… I mean… the gym!

Don’t miss out on the fun, come on over and join us at Pinterest! Request an invite at www.pinterest.com or leave me a comment and I can personally send you an invitation to get you started quicker. Pin, baby, pin!!

Perfectly Busy

I am still stuck in Crazy-Busy-Land, running on fumes basically, but it’s all good things so it’s A-OK. I have at least 2 new original recipes, starting a new art class tomorrow, a couple of diy-crafty projects and other fun stuff to share so hopefully I can get my act together soon and share them with you. I love sharing with you all. But until then, here’s to a Happy Monday!

My Garden Markers

Want to know what you do when it’s 12:30am and you can’t sleep because you took your thyroid medication too late in the day? Well, I’ll tell you! Better than that, I’ll show ya! Because this is what I did last night:
20110516-100338.jpg
First, I grabbed my alpahabet stamps, my Stayz On ink pad and some rocks that I collected from my brother’s house. He lives on the Yuba River, rocks are plentiful.  And free.

20110516-100355.jpg

Then I stamped the names of all the plants I planted recently: green onions, eggplant, beans, cilantro, basil, basil, basil, you get the idea.

20110516-100406.jpg

The next day, after the ink was dry, I set them out next to the plant they belonged to.  Aren’t they just perfect?

20110516-100414.jpg

Yeah, I had to make several “basil” markers because I have, like, 38 basil plants.  But that’s OK because I have lots of free rocks!

20110516-100424.jpg

I actually goofed the “beans” one up the first time around.  But it was no biggie, I just flipped the rock over and stamped it over.  And that’s another great thing about using these rocks; there are 2 sides so I get 2 markers for the price of one.  Uh, which was free.  Well, you know what I mean.  Maybe next year I won’t grow cilantro but I can still use the flip side of the maker for some other crop.

20110516-100432.jpg

20110516-100440.jpg

And this is the reason why I made heftier markers.  Like a good little gardener I put all the “freebie” plastic plant tags in the soil along side the plants but every time I water they get unearthed, the wind blows them all over the place and come one, admit it, my stamped rocks are cuter!  I’m going to pull out all of those ugly plastic markers and keep them in a drawer somewhere.

I wish I was brilliant enough to think of this one on my own, but I saw it over at Martha Stewart’s site.  That Martha, she’s pretty clever sometimes.

Everyday Art

“In the beginning God created…” Genesis 1:1

Late last year, while battling with a re-occurring illness, I was struggling to find things that brought me comfort.  Something to heal my soul while I waited for my physical body to heal.

I’ve always had a curious mind.  Even as a child I wanted to know how something worked, how to do it myself, how to make it.  Consequently, I’ve always had a lot of hobbies: sports, artwork, cooking, photography, reading, writing, sewing, you name it.

But when you don’t feel well and you have been drained of all energy; when your body aches and your brain is in a fog; when all you want to do is sleep, sleep, sleep… well, hobbies sorta take a back seat.  And so all of those things I loved to do, I had to stop doing.

Then this winter I took a class by Melody Ross, Soul Restoration I , that reminded me how important “creating things” is to me.  It’s part of my DNA.  It’s how God designed me.  It brings me joy.  Armed with new techniques and the reassurance that it doesn’t have to be perfect I let the artist in me explore.  My brain came alive and I started to see art in everyday life again.  And it healed my soul.

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Ps 19:1

Now, I try to be more mindful of the works of His hands as I go throughout my day.  Not just see it, but capture it.  I have my phone with me all the time so I try to take a pictures of “art”, as I see it.  That word “art” can mean a lot of things but I love this definition:

art: of more than ordinary significance.

So from time to time, I will be posting a collection of pictures of my Everyday Art:  things that are of more than ordinary significance to me.

I hope you don’t mind.

PS:  Some of you are wondering why that mess John Mayer is on my art-board.  But if you have ever heard him play live, you know why it’s art.  Melissa, that’s for you!

I’ve Been (re)Published!

20110509-101548.jpg

By far, the most popular article on my site is the one on Hudson’s Little Man Party.  Bree (aka: Lucy) and I (and others like Brandy and the vendors) worked so hard to pull that party together.  It was so much fun.   Then a couple months ago the local family magazine Me and Mine contacted Bree about possibly featuring his party in their Spring issue.

So with my blessing, Bree took my original article and photos, cut it down to size and submitted it and lo and behold, it came out in the Spring issue just a couple weeks ago!

Yea us!

PS:  It starts on page 12 if you’re looking for it.  And if you want to read the original article in full, it can be found here.

How Does My Garden Grow, Week 1

20110508-050756.jpg

Last weekend I got most of my garden planted in big/medium size pots and I have been so excited to watch everything grow. In just one week there has been some great progress!

20110508-045335.jpg
So far the cilantro is doing well, growing fast and hasn’t yet been pilfered by the critters. Last time I tried to grow cilantro some hungry animal snuck into my garden in the middle of the night and ate it down to nubs. I’m sleeping with one eye open this time.

20110508-045730.jpg
This is pole beans and is an experiment because I’ve heard that they are prolific so I just planted one tiny plant next to my tomatoes. It has already doubled in size.

20110508-045914.jpg
One week down and I have already eaten several thimble sized strawberries off my little plants. They were so sweet and perfumed with a sort of floral aroma, I’m really looking forward to later this summer when I will have enough for a shortcake or crepes.

20110508-050343.jpg
So far this is the only setback, my basil. I think it went into a little bit if shock when I transplanted it. Or it’s just not happy with the watering situation. I’m not sure yet but I trimmed it back to take some stress off of it and hopefully it will start doing better.

All in all, not bad for the first week.
