Yesterday I told you I was enjoying a cup of Day 4 but didn't tell you what it was. Ok, no big surprise, it was a hot cup of coffee.
But coffee is not today's Simple Thing. Ohhhhh nooooo, that would be too obvious. A cup of coffee in the morning is a ritual for most people I know. It's warm, it's nutty, it's caffeinated (for some anyway, not me.) But yesterday I did something I usually forget to do but makes a big difference in my coffee ritual.
Before I brew it, I add to the grounds a pinch of cinnamon and half a pinch of nutmeg. Then I brew as normal (I use a Bialeti) and the coffee (in my case, espresso) comes out heavenly scented. It tastes like dessert but I don't even add sweetener, just a splash of milk. I sat in bed yesterday, sipping my spiced coffee, the window open and breeze coming through... it was a perfectly peaceful and delicious morning.
That 30 second act of adding some spices to my coffee grounds turned a good cup of coffee into a treat. I'm not ashamed to say, it felt gourmet. And unlike adding the spices to the coffee after it has brewed (think the shakers of spice at the coffee shop), they don't sink to the bottom of the cup and turn into a ball of slime for you to consume in your last few sips of coffee. Yeah, I've done that.
A pinch of spice is a simple thing, with huge payback!
