Christmas Project #4: Custom Kitchen Towels

towels

This is a big spoiler.  Because my step-sisters were sick at Christmas and I haven’t seen some other family members yet, they haven’t received their gift.  And I know they are reading this so…surprise!

One of the things I love about my family is that we are really very simple people.  It’s the seemingly common things in life that make us the happiest.  We can be just as happy with a thoughtful, inexpensive gift as an expensive present at Christmas. We truly enjoy exchanging homemade gifts, a tradition we unofficially adopted after the kiddos started coming along.  This year cousin Ashley made homemade ranch dressing mix, Andrea made salt caramels, Amy made delicious jams, and so much more.

I wanted my gift this year to be something my siblings could enjoy for a long time and I landed on custom kitchen towels.  Originally, I wanted to imprint something Christmas-y on flour sack towels.  They are so useful and are easy to clean.  But I was having trouble finding a suitable size towel and then one day I stumbled on these lovely, almost vintage looking tea towels, with blue threading.  I just loved the texture and the color.  Not that I’m a cheapskate, but I do have a rather large family, so I was able to buy a big stack of towels for, get this, $10!

Next I had to decide what I wanted to put on the towel.  It was harder than I thought it would be.  Some of us really get into the whole Santa-thing, while others not-so-much.  “Merry Christmas” was just too obvious and I was worried that a picture of a Christmas tree or holly would get too muddled over time.  The towel had such an Old World feel to it, I wanted an Old World graphic to match.  And that’s how I landed on “Joyeux Noel”, which literally means “Merry Christmas” in French.  I chose an Old English type of font to print the words out onto plain old paper.

Are your ready for the transfer process?  It’s super easy.  I took pictures of the trial run on flour sack towels with a different graphic, so don’t be confused!

towel finished

This is the finished practice-towel.  I have tried several different transfer methods and so far this is my favorite.  I don’t know if it will work with a color print…hmmm… might have to try that some other day.

Citri-Solve Transfer

citrisolve

This is the stuff, CitraSolv.  It’s an all natural cleanser/degreaser, I bought mine at Whole Foods ages ago.  It’s strong stuff so don’t go splashing it around!  And you’ll only need a little bit for this project.

graphic

You will also need a graphic, printed with a toner-based printer or copier.  An ink-jet printer will not work hereImportant: you must reverse your image, particularly if there are letters or numbers involved.  If you don’t mind if the project comes out backwards, then it doesn’t matter so much.  As you can see here, I have printed this pretty label out backwards (I think this graphic came from Graphics Fairy).  Cut your graphic out BUT leave about and inch border of paper around so you can tape it down to the towel.

towel burnish

After you have taped the graphic face down to your towel, with a small paintbrush “paint” a small amount of CitraSolve onto the back of your graphic.  You don’t want it soaking wet with solvent because your image will bleed and get sloppy.  It should look a bit like an oil-stain.  As soon as you’ve applied the CitraSolve, grab a spoon.  Using the back of the spoon you will rub or burnish the back of your graphic into the towel.  Use small, swirly motions and be sure to travel the spoon over the entire graphic.  It takes about 1-2 minutes, depending on the size of your graphic.  Be careful, you don’t want the graphic to slide around because it will cause your graphic to transfer unevenly.  This is not always a bad thing, but if you are transferring letters or small details they may not be the most clear.

towelpeel

As soon as you are done burnishing with the spoon you can carefully peel of the paper, your image will be transferred…ta-dah!  But you’re not quite done.  Now, I don’t know if this part is necessary, but someone else told me to do it so… just do it and don’t ask questions!  Place an old rag, dish towel, scrap of fabric, etc. directly underneath your newly transferred image and run over the top of your transfer with a hot iron.  Supposedly, this helps dry up any excess CitraSolve.  I have no idea if it’s true, but it smells good!

towelupclose

Here is my image, fully transferred.  You can see that the small lettering gets a little muddled, mostly due to the texture of the towel but also because of the burnishing.  I don’t mind it, I think it lends to the vintage look.  If I wanted perfect letters I would have to do silk screening, something else I’m dying to learn.

Over time, especially with the use of harsh detergents or bleach, this transfer will fade.  But again, I think that lends to the antiqued feel of it and I like it.

towels

So that’s my last Christmas Project for this year!  I vow to be better prepared next year and get some of this stuff done earlier than the night before Christmas.  Who am I kidding, I will procrastinate next year just like always.

Friday Recipe & My #3 Christmas Project: Granola from Ina

granola

First of all, notice those tags?  Fabulous, if I do say so myself.  The bags and twine came from Garnish, they are also fabulous.

Now on to the real info, our Friday Recipe and the 3rd installment of My Christmas Projects for this year….. homemade granola inspired by Ina Garten’s recipe. Along with Project #4 (you will see that tomorrow) I passed out a little bag of granola.

Ina’s recipe calls for a lot of dried fruit, something I’m not usually a fan of, so I just left it out.  Also, I prefer walnuts over almonds so I made a little substitution.  It’s your kitchen, your food, do it your way.

granola bowl

That is one big batch of granola.  I made a 2nd big batch, not necessarily because I wanted to, but because I had to.

You all know I love and adore Ina, her recipes are amazing.  This was the first time that one of her recipes kinda let me down BUT only because I did not take into consideration that my oven would cook faster than her recipe called for… as in half the time.  Yikes.  Because Ina’s recipe calls for honey and sweetened coconut, those sugars get all caramelized and brown pretty quick.  Faster than I had planned, faster than Ina said they would.  That first batch was just this side of burnt, but had too much great caramel-ly goodness to toss out…

granola baked

…so… I made a 2nd batch of granola from a different recipe, one that uses unsweetened coconut and slightly less cooking time, and combined the finished products.  Here’s the funny part:  I didn’t tell anyone about my little snafu because… well, why would I do that?  A couple days ago my sister texts me, “Your granola was awesome! I want the recipe.”  Alls well that ends well.

granolayogurt

Because I believe in quality control, I sprinkled some of my granola over Greek Yogurt (Fage of course) and drizzled a little honey on top.  It was sublime.

I will share the 2nd granola recipe with you next week because, well, you’ll have to stay tuned to find out why!

Homemade Granola by Ina Garten

Don’t forget, I left out all the fruit and be sure to check it after 15 minutes in the oven!  Oh… and if you have parchment or a silplat, use it because all that sticky sweetness will become cemented to the bottom of your sheet pan.

My Christmas Projects: Project #3 Custom Ornament

filthyanimal

If quoting movies were a recognized language, my whole family would be considered bi-lingual.  We quote movie lines to each other constantly!  Christmas movies are our all time favorite movies to quote, especially Home Alone I & II.  In fact, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t know the line “Merry Christmas you filthy animal…and a Happy New Year!”

Another ritual in our family is a little tradition we call Cousin Christmas.  My cousin Jill, my sister and I take one evening the week before Christmas to exchange gifts with each other and we always get each other a special ornament.  I had a hard time finding a good ornament this year so instead, I made my own…. inspired by a favorite movie quote… from Home Alone II!

ornaments

I swear, I’m not doing a paid advertisement for Michaels but I found these little porcelain Christmas trees in their clearance section for less than $1.  I grabbed those up and knew exactly what I was going to do with them.  I printed out the movie line that we have repeated to each other a hundred times, if not more, and the date to commemorate our 2011 Cousin Christmas.  I tried printing it several different ways but finally landed on white lettering on a black background.

ornmod

I put down a light coat of Mod Podge, pasted the letters down and set them aside to dry.  Then I realized I put some of the words on backwards, had to peel them up, reapply the Mod Podge, and let them dry once again.  I do things like this on a regular basis.

ornament

They dried in less than an hour and they were perfect!  Total cost for both ornaments was less than $3 but worth so much more!

My Christmas Projects: Project #2 DIY Photo Canvases

canvas all

I loved this project, transferring a photo onto a canvas but in all the craziness, I didn’t take a final picture of this project so I’ll have to show you an example from one of the tutorials I referred to:

.

I used a picture of my Grandma when she was a toddler and her father, my Great Grandfather, and transferred it onto an 8×10 canvas using gel medium and water. It is a really easy project, you can read the general directions here, but I will tell you from experience that 1) an inkjet photo will work just as well as a laser jet photo, 2) you can use Mod Podge or some other decoupage medium, you don’t have to use gel medium.

layer

The process is fairly simple, the hardest part is waiting for it to dry.  First you put down a thin but even layer of gel medium or Mod Podge.

spritz

Next you lightly spritz the photo (on regular paper, not photo paper) with water.  You don’t want it soaking, just barely enough water to soften it a bit.

scrape

This is the most important step: first lay your picture face down onto the canvas and then carefully scrape the back with a piece of plastic (old Starbucks cards are perfect for this) to make sure that it lays down smoothly and that all the bubbles and excess gel medium are squeezed out the sides.  You must be patient when doing this.  Start from the center and gently scrape out towards the edges.  Wipe up any excess gel medium that squirts out the edges.  Now let it dry.  I think it’s best to let it dry overnight but if it’s a small project sometimes you can hurry it along with a blow dryer.

scrape2

After it dries completely, your picture will be visible through the paper backing, having been transferred to the canvas.  All you have left to do is spritz again with water, and begin scraping back the paper backing.  This takes some time, I find using my fingernail is the most productive but you can use your plastic card again to help.  The more you scrape, the more distressed your photo will become.  Keep spritzing with water and scraping until all the paper is gone.  After it dries I use some light sandpaper to further rough up the edges and make sure all the bits of paper have come off.

The final step is to apply a thin layer of matte Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to seal your canvas.

I made two canvases, the one of my grandmother and also one of Santa.

santacanvas

I used them in our family gift exchange and as I knew would happen, there was little bit of good natured bartering over them, nostalgia being a hot commodity in our family.  My grandma was shocked to see herself on a canvas!  I can’t believe I forgot to take a picture of the finished product, but I need to make another one for my sister so I’ll be sure to photograph that one.

All in all, it’s a cheap project.  Michael’s runs deals on their canvases all the time, you just have to keep your eyes open and wait for a sale.  Or use their mobile app to get coupons, there is as new one almost every week.  I always have Mod Podge on hand and printing the photo onto plain paper from my inkjet printer was practically free. Another under $10 project that was a big hit!

My Christmas Projects: Project #1 Photo Tags

hohoho

Another Christmas has passed, I hope yours was as great as mine.  With the exception of all of my step-siblings missing out on Christmas Day because they were either sick or working, it was a whole weekend of celebrating with friends and family.

I wanted so badly to share this year’s Christmas projects but it would have spoiled the surprise for a lot of the recipients so it had to wait.  So this week I will share my little projects with you, starting today with this one:

PROJECT #1

Some of you will recall me mentioning Older & Wisors 31 Ways to Wrap Your Crap and this tag idea she featured. As soon as I saw it I knew which picture I wanted to use:

Scan0003

This is my dad dressed up like Santa Claus, circa 2006ish.  Who better to put on your tags than Santa?!  And since I already had the photo, it was FREE.  I like free.

santamulti

I resized the photo and printed multiples out onto white cardstock.  The white cardstock cost me a couple of bucks for the entire pack because I found a small pack at Michael’s on sale.  I think I used 3 sheets of the cardstock so the cost for this project was pennies.

santacut

I bought this tag die cut at Michael’s right after Thanksgiving with a 50% off coupon, I think it cost me about $7 and I will get so much use out of it.  Using the die cut I punched out the tags and attached them to the gifts with ribbon.

tagdone

It took people a few minutes to recognize the photo but once they actually did they were cracking up laughing, especially my dad.  A few people even saved it after they opened their gift.  I thought it was as special memory and a nostalgic way to celebrate yet another year of giving.

So there was Project #1!  Using my Michael’s coupons wisely I was able to recreate this project for less than $10 and have cardstock and the die cut to use for future projects.  Stay tuned for the rest!

Friday Recipe: Sweet Potato Fries w/ Sriracha Dipping Sauce

image

My beauteous friend Beckie sent me this article about a Sriracha-a-holic and her hilarious addiction to Sriracha sauce.

image Here’s a clip from the story:

I knew I had crossed the line when one day I found myself squirting a little red sauce on dark chocolate. I looked in the mirror and took a deep breath as I wiped a trail of red sauce dribbling from my mouth.

It’s really a great little story, but what makes it even better are the recipes below the story!  And…. what really won my heart was the recipe for Sweet Potato Fries with Sriracha Dipping Sauce because

  1. I have an obsession with sweet potato fries.  I make mine very similar to her recipe, with a spicy kick. They get a little crispy on the edges and taste like candy.  Veggie-candy.
  2. I have an obsession with Greek yogurt. Specifically, Fage Greek Yogurt. imageThere is no other Greek yogurt, in my opinion.
  3. Ummm… I have never tried Sriracha sauce (gasp!).  I have really wanted to try it since it is spicy, garlicky and anyone who’s anyone uses it in recipes.  I want to be a cool kid too!

So I’m going to make this spicy dipping sauce to go with my spicy sweet potato fries and I just know I’m going to love it!  Thanks, Beckie!!

It’s almost Christmas and I’m busy with last minute Christmas projects, none of which I have been able to show you because many of the recipients lurk here, but I will show you after Christmas, I promise.

Have a merry, merry Christmas friends.  I hope you spend it with those you love and remember the One who loved us most.

I Am A Dork, But Now You Can Search

Occasionally, I amaze myself with my… stupidity is kind of a strong word… let’s call it cluelessness.  The other day I was working on a project and needed to find a picture I had posted several months ago.  “No problem.” I thought to myself, “I’ll just go to the website and run a search.”

I sat there, in front of my computer, looking high and low for the search box on my website only realize, about 15 minutes later, that there was no search box on my website.  In the rush of designing last year I completely forgot to include a search feature, the most basic and fundamental component of a website. A whole year has gone by and I just now figured this out.

I am a dork.

search

You will relieved to know that I have now corrected my tiny faux pas and there is now a basic search box living on the sidebar.   So if you want to find my post on how to make microwave popcorn or you need to find a printable I featured earlier or you just want to see how many times I’ve mentioned squirrels in the past year, you can now find that which you seek easily and without the frustration I put myself through.

I wonder what else I’ve forgotten….

Another Shopping App

image

After I posted last week on my newest app find, CardStar, Wonder Twin alerted me to an app she uses for shopping called GeoQpons.  This app contracts with businesses small and large to advertise the deals, sales and events at these stores.  Just scroll through their lists to find a deal near you.  Here are some features of GeoQpons:

•LARGEST database of mobile coupons and deals for local and big brand retail stores
•Anytime access to Favorite coupons
•SOCIAL – share coupons and deals with your friends via email, Facebook or Twitter
•Search bar to search for coupons
•New Coupons button for quick access to the latest offers
•Coupon Category filter such as Auto, Dining, and Beauty
•SET LOCATION to search coupons for any location in the US.

After downloading I checked to see if anybody in my neighborhood was running any specials through GeoQpons and sure enough, our local take-n-bake-pizza-place was offering several specials.

geo1

You can scroll through a list of stores and business to find your favorites and mark them for faster shopping.

geo3

Another really great feature is the bar code scanner.  I scanned a bottle of supplements from my medicine cabinet and GeoQpons found them at almost half off!

geo2

One feature you are going to want to turn off is the initial “email signups” screen that pops up every time you open the app, and throughout your session.  It will drive you bonkers.  Just go to settings to turn it off.

It’s a great little app and I will definitely be using it this week as I finish up my Christmas shopping and thanks to Wonder Twin (aka: Serena) for sharing it!!

Friday Recipe: Eggs Florentine from The Chew

Eggs Florentine from The Chew

I don’t know if it’s all the pastries and sweets being passed around right now, but I’m craving good-for-me food lately.  Now, as some of you may remember, in general I do not eat eggs.  That is until I started craving hard boiled eggs a few months ago when I saw Bobby Flay making them on TV. Now I eat hard boiled eggs on a semi-regular basis, go figure.

Well, this recipe from Daphne Oz on The Chew now has me craving poached eggs, something I have NEVER eaten before and have always been repulsed by.  OK, maybe it’s the hollandaise that I’m really attracted to, but the point is I want to make and eat this Eggs Florentine recipe.  I even want to eat it over the whole grain bread that is recommended by Dr. Oz.

And don’t be intimidated by hollandaise sauce, that golden, velvety sauce of the gods.  It’s as simple as dumping some eggs yolks and lemon juice in a blender and drizzling in some (actually, a lot) of melted butter and as sprinkle of cayenne.  You can do it, I promise.

You can watch Daphne and Dr. Oz make this delicious breakfast here and the recipe can be downloaded here.

Happy Weekend, friends.  I hope you get all your Christmas shopping done!!

“Pin It” Button

image

***Disclaimer:  If you do not use Pinterest this post is not going to make any sense to you.  So what you should do is stop everything, jump on over to Pinterest and see for yourself how great it is!

A few nights ago I was talking with a friend about Pinterest, because I talk about Pinterest all the time.  Anyway, she told me that she only used Pinterest for “repinning” other people’s “pins”.  I think my reply was something like, “WHAT??!!!”

I use Pinterest as my own personal filing cabinet of all things interesting or intriguing that I find on the internet. It keeps my inspirations organized and tidy so when I’m ready to either write about something, share it on Facebook or start a new project all I have to do is go to my boards and pick it out. It is so, so easy to do so I will give you a short tutorial on how to use the “Pin It” button:

First of all, go to this link on Pinterest.

Depending on which web browser you use, some instructions will pop up on how to either add a “Pin It” button to your toolbar (Safari) or add a bookmarklet to your favorites (Internet Explorer).  There may be instructions for other browsers but those are the two I use.

After you have your “Pin It” button or bookmarklet installed, go to a webpage that has a picture you would like to save to a pin board.

Click on your “Pin It” button (or “Pin It” under your Favorites bookmarks) and a window like this will pop up:

image

Basically, all the pinable pics on that webpage are displayed and all you have to do is choose which pic you want to “pin”.  Then another popup box will appear:

image

This box should look familiar to you so just choose which board you want to pin to, give it a brief description and hit “Pin It”.  That’s it!

So easy, but makes pinning waaaaay more fun and useful.  Hope that all makes sense but if you still need help let me know!

CardStar, A Bargain Shopper’s Solution

Slideshow Image 1

This is my 4th attempt in less than 24 hours to get this article out to you.  Every time I hit “save” it disappears.  I don’t know whether to scream or to cry but darn it all, I will get it done!

I have been trying to tell you about a great, free app I heard about over at DigiTwirl.  Yes, I’m mentioning DigiTwirl because it is just so helpful.  Don’t look at me like that, did I steer you wrong when I raved and raved (and continue to rave) about Pinterest?  Just trust me.

Back to the story.

We are all doing a lot of shopping these days, right?  And we are all looking for a good deal, a sale or discount.  One of the ways stores do that is to provide special deals or rewards for signing up for a loyalty card.  I have several and I do use them BUT… one of the biggest reasons why a balk at signing up for any new cards is this:  real estate.  That’s right, I said real estate.  As in, my wallet doesn’t have enough real estate to hold one more rewards card.

And that’s where CardStar comes in.

With this free app you electronically store your loyalty cards on your mobile device, eliminating the need to lug them around in your purse.  Here’s how it works:

I20111212-220208.jpg

You choose your stores from an extensive list, or add one if you don’t see it on the list.

20111212-220233.jpg

Then you manually enter your card number or scan the bar code with your phone’s camera.  Voila!  Your card is now saved to your phone.  When it’s time to checkout, just show the cashier your “card” on your phone and they scan just the same as they would your physical card.  Same great savings and rewards but way faster and best of all (at least to me), you don’t have to pack around a 3 inch stack of cards.

20111212-220224.jpg

And here are a couple other great features of CardStar:

  • When you arrive at one of your stores you can check CardStar to see what the special deals are that day.
  • And…. if you save that store to your favorites list, it will automatically pop up on your phone when you arrive.

CardStar is a great way to save time and money!  See, wasn’t that worth waiting for?

Happy shopping!

I wrote the same post twice last night because each time I “saved” it, it disappeared.  My brain is too fried to go for try #3 so instead of a post about an amazing app that will help you save time and money, you get this:
