Crumbs 2.11.13

1.  Jake picked out this shirt.  I’m just kidding!  His mommy picked it out.

2.  My sister pinned this brilliant idea.  If you have a toddler who has discovered how to shut themselves in the bathroom, you need to do this!

3.  I have seen these little chalkboard spice jars before, but after looking at the photo, I realized my measuring spoons are on one side of the kitchen and the spice drawer is way on the other side.  It makes more sense to keep them closer together, right?  I’m going to have to fix that….

4.  There are so many great makeup tutorials on the web and all over Pinterest these days but I stumbled on this gal and I can’t stop watching her videos!  I even tried the No Makeup-Makeup one this weekend and loved it!

5. Aren’t these felt fortune cookies so darling?  And way easier to make than real fortune cookies, trust me!

6.  I waaaaaay prefer pencil highlighters to the traditional pen highlighters.  They are hard to find but this site has lots!

7.  Guess what Carey is buying herself for her birthday?!  Squirrel!

8.  I just booked a trip to Myrtle Beach!  I have no idea what is in Myrtle Beach!  But I know what isn’t there…. work!

Crumbs 2.4.13

Here are the leftovers  from last week:

1.  George Strait is on his final tour and I had the privilege to go this past week.  I have been listening to George Strait practically my whole life and it was a little surreal watching him and realizing that I would never again hear him live.  He sang about 1,000 songs, all chart toppers and it was grand.

2.  I think I must be the last person on the planet to jump on the This American Life Podcast bandwagon but the past few weeks I have really gotten into it.  This last week’s podcast on Surrogates was fascinating, especially Act 2 which was about a family who adopted a grown man who had served time in prison for the violent murder of his parents.  How’s that for a Monday morning? I know it is terribly morbid and ugly, but the story is told by one of the daughters of that family and is more about their dysfunction than the ex-con.  It’s fascinating, oops I said that already. But it is.  Surrogates | This American Life.

3.  I don’t know what happened but lately my Pinterest traffic has just about quadrupled and all because of my recipe for my Great Grandmother’s Oil Pie Crust.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled!  But I didn’t realize how popular granny’s recipe would be!

4.  Buttermilk Greek Yogurt Herb Dressing.  I like all five of those words.

5.  I have been looking for a quick and easy tutorial on sketching the human form.  I just always seem to get the proportions wrong.  I stumbled on this YouTube tutorial and she does such a great job of putting all into plain English, and concisely. There are 3 parts.

6.  In celebration of the upcoming Valentine’s Day, I did my nails like this.  It was so easy, too! I didn’t do glitter, just a red heart on a gray base.

7.  One of my hair stylists (yes, I have several.  This mop takes many hands to tame it) told me about this nifty appliance by Fagor that not only is a pressure cooker, but also is a rice cooker AND slow cooker.  I’m so curious…..

Crumbs 1.29.13

Here are a few “crumbs” I missed last week:

  • I know, I missed our Friday Recipe, so sorry.  The last few days of the week just got away from me.  But I worked this weekend on a fun recipe from my childhood (above) and I should have it ready for this Friday.  Fingers crossed!
  • On the way to/from work I listen to The Splendid Table Podcast.  This episode on olive oil was so informative on what makes good olive oil good and what makes bad olive oil bad.  And we’re in luck, one of the inexpensive-yet-quality olive oils recommended originates right here in California, California Olive Ranch.  And while we’re on the subject, my favorite olive oil is also from California but is just an hour or so up the road from me: Lucero.  I buy mine at Whole Foods in the bulk section.
  • Ann Voskamp’s 25 Point Manifesto for Sanity.  Thanks,  Anne.  I needed that.  My favorite (I think) is #4: Your work is art, it needs a soundtrack. Find your music. Play your music.  Sing your music.
  • Usually when I get a sore throat I make a mixture of lemon juice, hot water and honey and it usually does the trick. It’s both soothing and seems to speed up the healing.  But I saw this recipe for a clove-coconut throat soother and I think I might try it next time the need arises.  Which hopefully won’t be for a long, long time.
  • This show is old, I caught up on it on Netflix.  I have to admit, I’ve watched both seasons twice because it is so darn interesting.  You have to be some kind of crazy to do what these people have done.  Or dead, as sadly is the case at times.  It gives me a whole new perspective on Everest.
  • This “hello” shirt is officially on my wish list.  I have always adored retro football tees, and someday this will be mine.

Crumbs 1.22.13

Just a few leftovers from my week:

  • I think whole chickens and Cornish game hens are funny food props.  I like to make them sing and dance, even if I’m the only one in the kitchen.  True story.  Last weekend I made a simple dinner of game hen, marble potatoes and carrots, similar to this recipe. I trussed it and everything. 
  • Wonder Twin pinned this idea and I think it’s brilliant!  Instead of buying a bed skirt that slides all over and is impossible to put on straight, upholster the box spring with a staple gun!  Now I’m in search of the perfect fabric.
  • My Great-Grandma Pat used to sing a nursery rhyme to me when I was little, but it was in Polish so I never understood a word of it but it had hand motions, similar to “This Little Piggy Went To Market” and I remember it was about birds leaving a nest.  Somehow I stumbled on this explanation of the poem and now I know what she was saying!  I wish I knew someone who could say it still.  Jake would get a kick out of it.
  • Isn’t this forest animals print adorable?  I might need it.  And not just because there are dancing squirrels.
  • If you watch Downton Abbey you MUST watch this clip from Jimmy Fallon!
  • Aren’t these linen tea towels wonderful?  I am a sucker for a tea towel.

Crumbs 1.7.13

A few crumbs from my week:

  • Yesterday I juiced a few blood oranges for this recipe.  Yes, they do stain your hands.  Totally worth it.
  • I’ve been working on a swatch that has all the colors I would use to describe myself.  It includes a lot of colors that look like this.
  • Last night I was excited to make this hot toddy from shutterbean.com, then I realized I didn’t have any bourbon.  Drat!
  • Downton Abbey is back!  Season 3 began last night, but don’t tell me anything, I won’t have a chance to watch it until tonight.  Oh how I have missed Dame Maggie Smith’s snarky little remarks!
  • Earlier this week I was so honored to be able to participate in this project from Brave Girls Club.  Founder, Melody Ross, is taking a trip over to the Philippines to teach girls who were rescued out of the horror of human trafficking.  She will be teaching them how to use art to heal their battered souls and make artwork items that can help supplement their income. Melody will be distributing the truth cards that many of us Brave Girl Art School veterans created just for this trip.
  • Thanks to the new “Communities” function on Google+, I stumbled on this incredible foodie website.  So many inspiring recipes and stories!
  • Did you see Les Miserables yet?  I just love that story, a story about redemption.  Oddly, after about 15 minutes, you forget that they are singing the entire script.

Crumbs: 12-17-12

Here are a few “crumbs” from my week:

  • This weekend, I spent an hour or two going through my great-grandparent’s photo albums.  The above photo is of my Polish Great- Grandmother, Annette.  I believe that is some sort of swim dress she is wearing.  She was an excellent cook and I had many wonderful years with her.  The holidays always make me miss her and the others who have gone on. 
  • I love this idea of using old fashioned book covers and converting them to  journal covers or a spot to save your holiday cards.  I’m definitely going to try that one soon.
  • Have you seen these Air Swimmers?  My brother-in-law showed me this new product and it’s so clever!!
  • This year I have done something I have never done before: I have been watching all those corny Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movies.  Some of them have been painful, bad writing and even worse acting.  But I really enjoyed one from ABC called “12 Dates of Christmas.”  It’s cute romantic comedy but not over-the-top saccharin.  Or maybe I’ve watched so many that I’m totally desensitized.
  • We drew names for Christmas Eve and as a result I had to buy this movie as a gift.  Definitely drew a guy’s name.  Definitely.
  • I am IN LOVE with these recipe cards from 1canoe2.  They are the perfect mix of whimsy and function.  I first spotted them in a little shop in Nevada City-CA, not far from where I live.  Now I’m regretting that I didn’t buy them….
  • It took us a few weeks but we finally got LeiLani from Hello Glam to join mine and Bree’s Twitter party.  Don’t forget to drop by tomorrow and see what #careyandbree are up to!  The answer is no good, we are always up to no good.

Here are a few leftovers from my week:

  • I am totally in love with these shoes. Not only do they look comfy, I think they would make my extra-wide feet look narrower. Sigh…
  • WARNING:  The following link contains images of raw meat, pre-hatched eggs, and a chicken in various stages of butchery.  If any of those sights bother you, skip it.  But  I think this post about butchering chickens took a lot of moxie and I really appreciate it.  My 82 year old grandma recently taught a group of ladies how to butcher a chicken and she made pretty penny doing it.  Something so fundamental is now close to becoming  a lost art.  Food for thought.
  • I’m crushing on  this font.  I just need a good excuse to buy it.  Do you think my grocery list is a worthy enough project?
  • Since a few yards of knit jersey doesn’t cost much, I think I want to attempt this Bina-style wrap. It looks like something I could throw over a tshirt and lounge around the house in.
  • I did attempt this project last month and it worked!  In a matter of about 45 minutes I had made 3 wrap style leather bracelets.  I guess I should take a picture and show you… next time I wear it I will!
  • I realize this striped cardigan is maternity-wear, but can I have it anyway?  I just love the shape and pattern.  And since half of my wardrobe is black, it would go with everything.
  • I think topping an old table with sheet metal is brilliant!
  • The new Mumford & Sons album is crazy good.  ’Nuf said.
  • And lastly, it’s November 6th.  If you are an American and you are registered to vote, get out there and exercise your freedom!

Crumbs 6.19.12

Time once again for an installment of Crumbs.  Just consider “Crumbs” a drive-by-post of a few things that have been on my mind lately:

    • My friend Lynnie just introduced me to the app/website “How Stuff Works” and my nerdiness is satisfied.  They have podcasts on subject themes such as Stuff You Missed In History Class, Stuff Mom Never Told You, and The Coolest Stuff On The Planet.  The shows are informative but clever and humorous.  If you have a long car trip or a long ride on the stationary bike coming up you will be entertained!
    • I tried a version of cold-brewed coffee this weekend.  It had some highs and lows, I’m going to try it again later this week with a different recipe from America’s Test Kitchen.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Crumbs: 3.12.12

This is going to be a busy, busy week for me.  So here are few “Crumbs” to keep you busy:

 

 

  • Bree and I made this for our last Girl’s Wine and Cheese Night.  It was yummy and not too bad on the calories because it’s made with ricotta. I think next time I would add a little more garlic, a little more rosemary, a pinch more salt, then let it sit in the fridge for an hour so the flavors meld before baking.(click the pic for the recipe)

Crumbs 2.16.12

Crumbs?  Just a bunch of small topics, links, articles that I have run across lately that just didn’t make it to a post all their own.  Enjoy my ramblings!

  • The Seven Year Pen from See Jane Work.  It is exactly what it sounds like, a writing pen that lasts for 7 years!  And it comes in all sorts of dandy shades/designs like the blue “ciao” one.  I kinda want one.
  • I know I’ve told you about it before, but I’m going to tell you again because I use it all the time!  CardStar (for our new friends) is an app for your mobile phone that allows you to load your store rewards cards (like CVS, Sam’s Club, Ulta, Panera, etc.)  into your cell phone so that 1) you don’t have to scrounge around in your purse or wallet for your rewards card while you are standing at the checkout and 2) you can leave the cards at home if you want because all the info is preloaded into the app.  At checkout you just whip out your phone and the checker “scans” the bar code straight from the app.  Voila!  I have never used rewards cards & coupons  so much as I have since I started using the app.  I used it today!
  • Did you know there is a group on Facebook called Discussing Downton Abbey?  I’m just sayin’….
  • Not everyone can/wants to shell out the bucks for a Brazilian Blowout Hair Smoothing Treatment but did you know they have a whole line of hair products that work insanely well at smoothing your hair? I know some of you have been nervous about the formaldehyde in their original formula but they now have a line called Brazilian Zero that contains no formaldehyde.  It’s not for everyone, but if you have unruly hair like mine, I recommend it.
  • Someone on Pinterest posted this “markdown schedule” for Target.  I haven’t had a chance to see if it’s true or not but I’m gonna.  Like, tomorrow.
  • If you’re new to cooking or just want to brush up on the basics, I really recommend Kelsey’s Essentials on Cooking Channel.  She’s perky but not in an annoying way and she gives you the essential techniques you need to be a great home cook.

And that’s what’s been on my mind lately!
